Unique Features
Wildebeest are also known as a gnu. They are particularly dangerous when cornered or wounded. When not in danger or threatened, they are timid and curious. Sometimes they kneel when they feed.Wildebeest often associate with other animals such as impala, giraffe and especially zebra. Wildebeest have a very strong migratory instinct. In Central Africa they migrate in their thousands over a distance of hundreds of kilometers. Description The Wildebeest is an ox-like animal with a mane, beard, hair on the nose and a horse-like tail. Both sexes have horns. Predators The wildebeest's natural predators are lion, leopard and hyenas. Hyenas especially prey on new-born calves. Family Ties The wildebeest form mixed herds of up to 50 animals. During the mating season the males are particularly aggressive. |
