Elephant Safari - Abu Camp, Botswana
And now for something completely different! Even by exotic African safari standards, an elephant safari is not something you encounter every day, and it's certainly not an adventure to be missed.
Getting to know, and becoming involved in the elephant herd at Abu Camp will probably be one of the most memorable experiences of any traveler on an African Safari. Abu Camp is situated In the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Here you have access to some 500,000 acres of magnificent wilderness, made up of the flood plains of the delta, a myriad of pristine untouched islands, and unspoiled bush terrain – all of this home to hundreds of species of birds and mammals.
At first glance, the setting of Abu Camp amongst the trees, tells you you’re in for a magical and unique experience. The camp is secluded among the trees, made up of large ‘Afro-Bedouin’ tents – tall and airy canvas structures that blend in beautifully with their natural surroundings. Pathways link the tents to the dining area, and at night they are well lit, adding an extra dimension to the magical setting. However, as captivating and enchanting as this setting is, it does not take the visitor long to realize that the real stars of Abu Camp are its herd of elephant. Where it all began
In the nine eighties, an American animal trainer at a Portland zoo needed to relocate 3 African elephants and hoped to send them back to Africa. After many mishaps and a lot of negotiations he finally found a home for the elephants at Abu Camp in the Okavango delta, Botswana, where they were finally given a home and some freedom. And that's how the elephant safaris at Abu Camp were born. Today the herd is quite large and the safaris are world famous. |
