Desert Lions of the Namib
The lions of the Namib live mostly at the northern edge of the Namib Desert and roam along the deadly isolated shores of the desolate Skeleton Coast on the Atlantic Ocean. There they hunt seals to sustain them in this brutal, arid environment.
These lions have learned to adapt and survive in the desert, miraculously overcoming extreme heat and bone-dry conditions. But surprisingly, there is an abundance of prey in this harsh wilderness - gemsbok (oribi) and ostriches roam the desert freely, and seal colonies breed and flourish along the Skeleton Coast where it meets the Atlantic Ocean.
The desert lions of the Namib have learned to draw on every scrap of hunting skill they have acquired, and every survival instinct they possess in order to survive in this blistering, hostile, unforgiving and waterless place.
Despite the scarcity of water, there is no shortage of prey... Like the lion, the Gemsbok lives in the desert, and there are heavily populated seal colonies on the Skeleton Coast which fringes the western border of the Namib.
There is no open fresh water source and no surface water in the Namib Desert; just a few dry riverbeds. And yet the desert is alive and teeming with animals.
