Duiker (antelope) |
Description
The most common species of duiker in Southern Africa are Red, Blue and Grey Duiker (also known as common duiker). Duiker walk with a characteristic hesitant, high-stepping gait and are able to move with speed through dense bush. Predators Their main predators are leopard, jackal, eagles and pythons. When hunted, they either freeze, or run off in a fast zig-zagging pattern towards the nearest cover. When they run they flick their tails which acts as a signal to alarm other duiker or warn the predator that it has been seen. Family Ties Duiker are solitary and only form pairs when mating. Calves stay with their mothers for a short while, until they are able to fend for themselves. |
