Puku (antelope) |
Unique Features
Puku are water-loving and semi-aquatic and live permanently in wetlands. Their oily skins adapt them for long periods of contact with water. Puku cannot gallop fast on dry land but swim strongly and leap through shallow water in arching jumps. Description Shoulder height 80cms. White face markings. Bright golden-yellow coat. The females are slightly smaller than the males and have no horns. Predators: Their main predators are lion, but they are also preyed upon by leopard, hyena, wild dogs and crocodiles. Their young may also be killed by pythons. Puku rely on water and thick vegetation to provide them with cover against predators. |
