Unique Features
The Roan antelope is the second largest African bovid. It's striking face markings emphasize signals made by movements of the head. Description Shoulder height 140cm. Horns ridged and curved backwards. Black and white face markings. Light reddish-brown coat. The females are smaller than the males with thinner and shorter horns. Predators: Roan antelope are preyed upon by lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dogs and hyenas. Roan are not fast runners and aggression is their best defence. An advancing herd of roan antelope can rout a hunting lion. Family Ties: The Roan's society is divided into breeding herds of 10 - 12 individuals, each with an adult bull, bachelor groups, and solitary old males. |
