Okavango Odyssey - Botswana
Botswana's Okavango Delta is a World Heritage Site; a wetland paradise teeming with wildlife and one of the most incredible places on earth to visit and view wild game up close and in absolute abundance. It is the largest inland delta in the world, with an expansive landscape of breathtaking scenic beauty.
The Delta accounts for 95 percent of Botswana's surface water and this unique eco-system is a place of unbelievable natural beauty and plentiful and diverse wildlife. Each year flood waters from the Angolan highlands come down into the Kalahari desert, spreading over this vast delta network, creating a wetland Eden that supports a huge variety of wildlife, and an Eco-system of swamps, reed beds, flood plains, and large stretches of open water. At the heart of the Okavango Delta is the Moremi Game Reserve, which is mostly dry and dusty throughout the year, made up of hundreds of palm-fringed unspoiled islands. Behold one of Africa's last immaculate and abundant game viewing treasure troves.
The true Okavango Delta experience is in a mokoro, a traditional canoe dug out of solid tree logs. Mokoros are used to navigate the countless waterways and channels, providing magnificent up-close game viewing.
When the flood recedes, a magical thing happens: the vast flood plains fill with teeming wildlife. The Okavango Delta is both a permanent as well as seasonal home to a wide variety of wildlife - species include African Elephant, Buffalo, Hippopotamus, Lechwe, Topi, Blue Wildebeest, Giraffe, Nile Crocodile, Lion, Cheetah, Leopard,
Hyena, Antelope, Black and White Rhinoceros, Zebra, Warthog, African Wild Dog, and Baboon. The Delta also boasts over 400 species of birds, including African Fish Eagle, Crested Crane, Lilac-breasted Roller, Hammerkop and Sacred Ibis. Hippos in the wetlands - Image: Secret Africa
