Unique Features
The Springbok was named for its peculiar high springing leaps some 2 meters off the ground. It is also the national animal of South Africa. Many of the country's sports teams are named after this graceful antelope. The Springbok has a pronk - a fold of skin from shoulder to tail which is usually closed and shows as a narrow dark line. When Springbok are excited or alarmed, the fold opens and a crest of pure white, bristly hair about 15cm long appears. Description Shoulder height 75cm. The Springbok is a very graceful antelope with a light, reddish coat and white underparts. The females are similar to the males, but with smaller horns. Predators: Springbok are preyed upon by a wide range of predators such as lion, , cheetah, wild dogs, hyena and jackal. Family Ties: Their society consists of female herds, territorial males and bachelor herds. |
