Lechwe (antelope) |
Unique Features
Lechwe enjoy wet, marsh areas. They like wading in water and this also gives them protection from predators. The lechwe's hind legs are longer than their front legs. This enables them to run for long distances, and with relative ease, in marshy soil. Lechwe's legs are covered in some kind of water-repellant substance which seems to help them to run quite fast in knee-deep water. The males have long, curved horns. Family Ties Lechwe gather in herds which sometimes comprise of thousands of lechwes. Herds are usually made up of only one gender, but during mating season they mix. |
