Unique Features
Gemsbok (Oryx) live in exceptionally hot areas. Their body temperatures rise up to 45 degrees Celsius. A system of air passages in the nose cools blood entering the brain. Because of their dry and hot environment, gemsbok are nomadic and wander in search of grazing. Gemsbok often kneel when grazing and can go for long periods without water. Description Also known as the Southern African Oryx. The horns are long, straight and ridged. The males' horns are shorter and thicker than those of the females. Predators Their main predators are lion. They are also hunted by cheetah, hyenas and leopard. They usually flee when attacked but have been known to turn on lion, gore them with their horns, and toss them over their backs. Family Ties Gemsbok live in mixed herds of all ages and both sexes, numbering 10 - 30 animals. |
